For nearly twenty-five years, Mark
Nelson has pioneered developments in solo tuba literature with extensive
commissions and premieres of new music for tuba. He has made appearances
as a recitalist, lecturer, adjudicator, and master class teacher
in Canada, Japan, Australia, England, and across the United States.
Many of the new works Nelson has commissioned appear in his two
CD recordings, New England Reveries and Aboriginal Voices. He has
also had published a dozen tuba/euphonium ensemble arrangements,
over 160 reviews in the I.T.E.A. Journal, and articles in several
music journals on a variety of topics. He has been on the editorial
staff of the I.T.E.A. Journal since 1985, currently serving as Editor
of New Materials, and also served as Secretary on the I.T.E.A. Executive
Committee. His book, The Tuba as a Solo Instrument: Composer Biographies,
was released by Tuba-Euphonium Press in June 1995. He is also one
of the principal editors of the original edition of the Tuba Source
Book.
Mark Nelson's formal education includes the Bachelor of Arts degree,
magna cum laude, from Point Loma Nazarene University; the Licentiate
Performer's Diploma from Trinity College of Music, London; the Master
of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees from Arizona State University;
and the Master of Education degree in Education Administration from
the University of Vermont. His principal tuba teachers have been
Barton Cummings, Charles Hansen, Raymond Nutaitis, Roger Bobo, and
Daniel Perantoni. He is currently the Chair of Performing Arts at
Pima Community College in Tucson AZ and performs with Symphonia,
the Southwest Brass Quintet, Big Band Express on bass trombone,
the Southern Arizona Symphony, Arizona Symphonic Winds, and occasionally
with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. |
