and the Art of Live Performance I am often asked for samples of my playing, so I have put together this page to appease the masses. The recordings are all from live performances, so there will be the occasional flaw. As I discussed in a recent review for the ITEA Journal, I have found that many students have unrealistic and false impressions of how our instrument truly sounds. With modern recording technology it is possible for most anyone to put out a "flawless" recording, though often these do not indicate the true playing of the artist and/or a realistic view of their ability. This is not an attack on any performer, but rather a hope that people realize the reality that is presented. All that being said, I hope you enjoy the following clips. Some are entire pieces, while others are snippets and compilations. These recordings are from recitals and concerts throughout the past 15 years. This is my playing in all it's glory, intonation, clams and all. |

Kim Archer - Multiple Personalities Kim wrote this solo at my behest, and decided to play upon my love for many genres of music in the title. |
Eric Knechtges - ¿Que Pasa? Eric originally wrote this piece when he was 14. He edited it for me, and I premiered it at BGSU in 2004. |
Steve Winteregg - A Time For... Originally conceived as an unaccompanied piece for trumpet, Dr. Winteregg reworked the material for tuba to honor his former teacher, Robert LeBlanc. |
Bach - Two Bourrees This work from his Suite No. 3 for Unaccompanied Cello has become a recital favorite for me. |
Goedicke - Concert Etude After hearing this on numerous brass juries I decided to arrange it for tuba as a showpiece for myself. |
Muczynski - Impromptus for Tuba While these have shown up on contest lists and competitions for years, no commercial recording exists. |
Debussy - Syrinx This arrangement was made by Justin Brinkman while a student at BGSU. |
Telemann - Vivace Following my love of Baroque transcriptions, I put this together from the Recorder Sonata. |
Hindemith - Three Easy Pieces After hearing the recording of this cello work as performed by Toby Hanks on tuba, I had to try it. |
Broughton - Sonata A modern standard of the repetoire, this recording is from my graduate recital at Miami University. |
Koetsier - Sonatina Composer of many works for brass, both solo and ensemble. This recording is also from the MU grad recital. |
Cheetham - Sonata This is, in my opinion, one of the most fun modern tuba pieces to play. This is recorded at BGSU in 2005. |
Galliard - Sonata What student hasn't played at least one of the Galliard Sonatas? An absolute backbone of our literature. |
Telemann - Fantasia From the unaccompanied flute work. |
Ionel - Rumanian Dance No. 2 Another longtime recital favorite of mine. This serves well as a flashy encore. |

Bass - A Symphony of Carols Composer/Arranger Randal Bass must either be a tubist or have a best friend who is one. He writes us the best lines. |
Bass - Twas the Night Before... Once again, a fun line in a very audience friendly setting of a Christmas favorite, tuba included. |
Olt - Christmas Fanfare For the anniversary of the orchestra, fanfares were commissioned for each concert. I wrote this for the holiday. |
Duffy - Sephardic Dance A traditional Jewish dance, this arranger also seemed to like tuba, and puts us to hard work! |
Gershwin - An American in Paris I have always loved playing the music of Gershwin in any form, but the original is by far the best. |
Tschaikovsky - 1812 Overture While everyone knows the big melody toward the end, I have always enjoyed this section more. |
Prokofiev - Alexander Nevsky One of his somewhat lesser known works, this cantata is great fun for the low brass. |
Prokofiev - Alexander Nevsky Another clip from the cantata, this one showing the tuba and low voices getting a workout. |
Respighi - Fountains of Rome I know if I didn't put this up, someone would hound me for it. Shame the recording is unbalanced. |
